MCLEOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
NUTRITION POLICY 2008/2009
McLeod Elementary School is committed to offering staff and students healthy choices. We have developed the following policy
as it applies to the whole school community.
- The teachers will ensure healthy living and physical fitness curriculum be taught in each classroom.
- The staff will model and encourage healthy eating in the school.
- When treats are used in the classroom or school, healthy foods will try to be used more often. Also, staff will work to
incorporate a variety of reward strategies that do not use candy.
- Continue to have students go outside first at lunch, then eat, as this gives them more time to finish their lunch. This also
eliminates the problem of some students not eating or eating very little because they want to get outside.
- Students will be encouraged to take home left over food from their lunches.
- The PAC will make a point to sell nutritious foods over non-nutritious foods for fundraising events.
- The PAC will increase the selection for hot lunch to offer a wider variety of nutritious snacks/meals. (Also, the students will
be asked for input, as to what they would like to eat.)
- Parents and students will be informed of the healthy eating guidelines and informed of the many new options for hot lunch and
snack selections through PAC meetings and newsletters.
The whole school community believes children with healthy eating habits have the positive foundation they need to develop a healthy body
and mind. These new guidelines support that goal by helping children develop healthy habits at school that they can carry
throughout their lives.
