Special Message from the Superintendent

Every Child Matters

May 30th, 2021

Dear School District  59 families, students and staff,

Starting tomorrow flags across our district will be flown at half mast for 215 hours to honour each child whose remains were discovered on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, at  Tk’emlups te Secwepemc, in Kamloops, BC.  This devastating tragedy reminds us of the grief and trauma caused by the residential school system.

On Tuesday, June 1st we will recognize Orange Shirt Day in all of our schools.  We encourage everyone to wear orange to show that we are all thinking of the children and families who have been affected by this tragedy.  It is also a reminder of our commitment to truth and reconciliation.  We will begin the day with an acknowledgement for the children and for every family affected by the legacy of the residential school system.  We will take a moment of silence to honour the lives lost.

For the rest of this week, schools will plant orange marigolds in memory of the thousands of children who were sent to residential schools across Canada, for those who never returned and in honour of the families whose lives were forever changed.

If students and their families need someone to talk to, please reach out to your school and we can connect you with our family support workers or counsellors.

Now more than ever, it is important to check in with each other, listen, be compassionate, offer a shoulder to cry on, and hold each other up through this difficult time.

Please take care of each other,

Christy Fennell
