We have finally arrived at our first week back to school. For some of you this is your first time back since before Spring Break. We are excited to see you and we have missed you. We can’t wait to show you our new way of doing things. You probably already know that your school will look different on the inside and some daily routines will change. You may have specific entrances to go to, different breaks and lunch times, and you may be told that you have to stay in a certain area while using the playground. Even though things will be different, I know that you will adapt to these changes and still have fun while at school. Plus, you may even find that you like some of these new rules, because with less students on the playground, you might even get more time to spend on your favourite equipment or playing your favourite games.

September 4th, 2020
On September 10th students will be returning to classrooms for in-class instruction. Schools have been reaching out by phone, e-mail, and posting information on their social media and school websites that outlines what returning to school will look like.
For parents who still have concerns about returning to in-class instruction, please connect with your principal who can guide you through the process of what options and support the District can put in place for your child. The District and our schools are working hard to be flexible, address concerns, and provide supports that meet the needs of all students and parents in School District 59.
If you have considered options outside of our district or homeschooling, please contact your school principal or Director of Instruction Paul Chisholm, to discuss your concerns prior to making your final decision. We can provide you with information about what the District will be offering to parents and children who have concerns about returning to face-to-face instruction.

First day back for grade 1-7: Thursday, September 10th.
The first day back will look different this year. It is still a shortened day. It will begin at 11:00am and conclude at 1:40pm. We are asking that students stay off of the playground equipment prior to school starting. We are asking parents and students to arrive no earlier than 10:45am. At 10:45am, teachers will have their direct fire exit doors open. These doors are located around the outside of the school. Class lists will be posted on teacher's doors, so students will be able to walk around the outside of the school and identify their classroom with socially distancing from others. Once they have located their classroom they may enter. At this time parents will not be able to enter the classroom with their children. At the 1:40pm dismissal, students will also be dismissed from these direct fire exit doors. School District 59 (PRS) is excited to be welcoming students back to Stage 2. Since March families have been dealing with constant change to the education model. Once again, we are asking that you work with us in this new change. Teachers and principals are working together to develop plans for their school that meet the needs of all learners. Quality education and safety are our top priorities. Our goal is to maximize face to face instruction because that is the best model for students to thrive.
The School District 59 Restart Plan for K-12 Education in Stage 2 has been approved by the Ministry of Education. Here is an overview of the most important things for you to know. More detail is provided in the links at the end of this document. Next week, schools will publish individualized school plans on their website. The last week has been focused on creating learning groups/cohorts, decreasing the amount of people that students and teachers come in contact with, in a day, and decreasing the amount of transitions students and teachers have in the school.

You will be contacted this week by phone or by email about the plan for Kindergarten to start on Thursday, September 10th. If you have not yet heard from the school please feel free to contact us directly @ 250-782-8147 or email the Kindergarten teacher, Miss Hall at firstname.lastname@example.org.

According to the Provincial Health Officer and the Centre for Disease Control, most children who are immunocompromised can return to in-class instruction where safety measures are in place. Protective self-isolation is only recommended for children who are severely immunocompromised as determined on a case by case basis.
The advice from the Provincial Health Officer and the BC Centre for Disease Control for parents/caregivers of students with complex medical conditions or underlying risk factors, or who are immunocompromised themselves, is to consult with their medical health care provider to determine the level of risk regarding their child’s return to in-class instruction. If it is recommended that the parent/caregiver seek an alternative to in-class instruction for their student, and if they do not wish to register their student in a distributed learning program or homeschooling, they will be need to get a doctor’s note indicating the need for accommodations due to health-related risks.
Parents/Caregivers with immune suppression concerns either for themselves or their student should contact their school to review the process for accommodations and to develop a collaborative plan with the school/district.
