French Immersion begins in Kindergarten for students at EFR. They are immersed in a language rich environment in kindergarten and so begins their path to second language acquisition. Immersion programs are designed to provide non-francophone children with a high degree of proficiency in the French Language. While an exposure to a second language is beneficial, French Immersion broadens and deepens that exposure.
French is not only a subject, it is the language of instruction and a means of communication. Teachers follow the same provincial curriculum guidelines as in the regular program only texts are written in French. The French Immersion program at EFR is supported by a full-time French Language Educational Assistant, a variety of authentic cultural experiences from music performances to author visits. Additionally, the French Immersion program contributes to the life of the school with events such as Winter Carnaval.
