Pink Shirt Day was Inspired by an act of kindness when two teenage boys handed out pink shirts at their school to protest a bullying incident they witnessed involving a new Grade 9 student. The boy was being taunted by other students for wearing a pink shirt. The school wide response to the incident caught on across Canada and with that act of kindness, Pink Shirt Day was born. Pink Shirt Day has grown to be recognized annually worldwide.
This year, Pouce Couple Elementary School held a design contest where students were challenged by the school’s Leadership Team and Social Justice Club to create a logo design for Pink Shirt Day. Students worked hard at creating designs that promoted kindness and anti-bullying; the designs were narrowed down to six finalist and judges, Public Librarian Courtney Johnson and Danielle Veach, Pouce Coupe Mayor selected the winner!
Congratulations to Maddison Terkilsen on your winning design! The school purchased pink shirts with Maddison’s design for all students and staff to wear on February 26th.
