Community Update - September 3, 2026
Dear Tumbler Ridge Community,
As students prepare to return to school in the coming weeks, we are pleased to share an update from the Ministry of Infrastructure that a new secondary school-sized gym is starting construction behind the current aquatic centre and skating rink to support Tumbler Ridge Secondary School students.
The new prefabricated gym will provide students with a dedicated indoor space for physical education, sports and other activities while they continue learning at their temporary school campus.
Until the new gym is ready for use, secondary students will continue to use space in partnership with the Recreation Centre for physical education and activities. The District of Tumbler Ridge and the Recreation Centre have been a great support in providing space for different activities since March. We are grateful for their help and support.
The gym is designed to be delivered and ready for use quickly, helping meet the immediate needs of students and staff. It is expected to be ready for students in early 2027.
We recognize the importance of having dedicated spaces for students to learn, stay active and connect with one another. This new gym will provide that space while work continues toward the construction of a new permanent secondary school. Consultation for the new build will happen this fall.
Once the new secondary school is built, the prefabricated gym will continue to be used by the District of Tumbler Ridge to support the broader Tumbler Ridge recreation and community activities.
We are pleased to share this update with families and community members ahead of the new school year and will continue to provide information as construction progresses and timelines are confirmed.
We thank the Tumbler Ridge community for its continued patience, care and support as this work moves forward.
